UP Prospectus 2027: Faculty Brochures, APS Scores and Entry Rules

The University of Pretoria does not publish one thick prospectus for school leavers. For 2027 entry, UP splits its undergraduate information across nine faculty brochures, each marked “Undergraduate Faculty Brochure: 2027” and posted on its Faculty Brochures 2027 page. Download the brochure for the faculty you want, because the subject levels and APS for each degree appear only in that faculty’s table.

Be aware of the timing before you start reading. UP accepted applications for 2027 from 1 April 2026. Veterinary Science closed on 31 May 2026 and every other undergraduate programme closed on 30 June 2026, so the main window has passed. The brochures say all UP programmes are number-limited and that applicants can expect feedback by September at the latest. To check where your application stands, or to see how the process works, go to our UP online application guide.

Nine faculty brochures instead of one book

These are the official PDFs UP links for 2027 entry. Each one repeats the general admission rules and then lists its own programmes, careers and requirement tables.

Learners writing a school-leaving certificate not issued under Umalusi, such as Cambridge or IB, need a separate document. The brochures point them to the International Undergraduate Prospectus 2027 under Admission information on UP’s programmes pages.

Reading UP’s APS out of 42

UP adds the NSC achievement ratings (1 to 7) of six recognised 20-credit subjects. Life Orientation carries only 10 credits, so UP leaves it out entirely, and the highest possible score is 42. UP gives no bonus points for any subject. Grade 11 results decide conditional offers, while the final NSC results decide whether the place holds. Every brochure also warns that meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission.

Scores UP prints for its most-wanted degrees

The figures below come straight from the “Application requirements for NSC/IEB for 2027” tables. “English” means English Home Language or English First Additional Language.

  • MBChB (6 years): APS 35; English 5, Mathematics 6, Physical Sciences 5.
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (5 years): APS 35; English 5, Mathematics 6, Physical Sciences 5.
  • Bachelor of Nursing Science (4 years): APS 28; English 4, Mathematics 4, Life Sciences 4 (Physical Sciences is not accepted in its place).
  • LLB (4 years): APS 35; English 6.
  • BCom in Accounting Sciences (3 years): APS 34; English 5, Mathematics 6.
  • Four-year BEng (Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Electronic, Computer, Industrial, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Mining): APS 35; English 5, Mathematics 6, Physical Sciences 6.
  • Five-year BEng (formerly ENGAGE, any discipline): APS 33, with at least 65% in English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
  • BSc in Computer Science (3 years): APS 30; English 5, Mathematics 6.

Health Sciences ranks on a Merit Point Score

For medicine, dentistry and the other health programmes, the APS above is only the entry ticket. The Health Sciences brochure explains that the faculty ranks applicants by a Merit Point Score, sets no fixed cut-off and reserves places in an Open and a Designated Group category. A conditional offer made on Grade 11 marks stays valid only if your final NSC Merit Point Score drops no more than five points below the Grade 11 one. The Clinical Medical Practice degree adds a Biographical Information Form, and some programmes consider first-choice applicants only.

Fee and who to ask

UP charges a non-refundable R300 application fee for 2027. It waives the fee when the household earns R150 000 a year or less, provided you upload proof of income during the online application. Questions about a submitted application go to the UP Student Service Centre on 012 420 3111 or ssc@up.ac.za. For other universities’ prospectus PDFs, use our university prospectus hub.

Can I still apply to UP for 2027 after 30 June?

Not as a normal first-year applicant. The Law brochure does describe one exception: if space remains, the Law faculty may conditionally admit, after the closing date, graduates or NSC holders with an APS of 38 or more and at least level 6 in English, at the discretion of its Admissions Committee.
