SASSA Status Check on Gov Chat: How to Use It

GovChat had its biggest moment in 2020 and 2021, when SASSA used it as an extra way to apply for the R350 relief grant from a phone. Many guides still send readers there for SASSA status checks. Before you try, it helps to know what GovChat is today and where SASSA itself now points people.

What GovChat is

GovChat is a citizen-engagement platform that lets people contact several government departments through chat. It is a partner platform, not a channel that SASSA owns or runs. When SASSA reopened SRD applications in August 2021, it named GovChat as an extra route alongside its website and WhatsApp, reachable through GovChat’s web app and its Facebook Messenger page.

Is there still a SASSA service on GovChat?

We could not confirm one. SASSA’s 2026 grant booklet, “You and Your Grant”, lists its official channels, and GovChat is not among them. We also found no SASSA or Department of Social Development statement since then that names GovChat as a way to check status. That doesn’t prove the menu has vanished, but it does mean SASSA no longer promotes it. Treat anything GovChat tells you about your grant as second-hand, and confirm it on SASSA’s own channels.

If you open GovChat anyway

  • Reach it only through its own app or verified Messenger page, never through a link in a forwarded message.
  • Look for a social development or SASSA option in its department menu. If you can’t find one, the service is no longer offered there.
  • If a SASSA option does take you to the SRD website, that page should be srd.sassa.gov.za. Any other address is a warning sign.
  • Never type a bank PIN anywhere. SASSA never asks for one.

GovChat compared with SASSA’s own WhatsApp line

  • Who runs it: GovChat is a separate platform serving many departments. The WhatsApp number 082 054 0016 is SASSA’s own, printed in its 2026 booklet.
  • Current listing: SASSA lists its WhatsApp number today; it does not list GovChat.
  • Where the status really lives: neither one replaces the SRD website. SASSA’s booklet tells SRD applicants to check status on srd.sassa.gov.za, and other grant holders to call 0800 60 10 11, email or visit an office.

The SASSA WhatsApp guide walks through using the official number. If you were hoping GovChat would save data, MoyaApp opens the SRD website without using your bundle; the Moya set-up page shows how, and the cost comparison of status channels covers the rest. For every method by grant type, see how to check your SASSA status.
