Moya App SASSA Status Check: Install and Set Up Data-Free

People still type “SASSA 350” into search bars, but the relief grant for unemployed adults, known as the SRD, now pays R370 a month, and the Budget extended it at that amount to 31 March 2027 (the guide to the old R350 status check explains the change). What has not changed is the cost problem: checking your SRD result every month uses data many applicants don’t have. MoyaApp, a South African messaging app, offers a way around that. This page covers getting Moya onto your phone and finding its SRD link. Running the check itself is on a separate page.

Moya is a doorway, not a SASSA office

SASSA does not own or run Moya. The app’s makers describe themselves as a conduit: Moya pays the mobile data so that you can open the official SRD website, srd.sassa.gov.za, without spending your own bundle. Moya does not process applications, approve anyone or make payments, and it cannot answer questions about your grant. Everything you see after tapping the link comes from SASSA’s own site.

Installing the app safely

  1. Open the Google Play Store, Huawei AppGallery or Apple App Store on your phone.
  2. Search for MoyaApp and check the developer name and download count before you tap Install.
  3. Avoid copies passed around as APK files on WhatsApp or download sites. Moya itself warns that versions from unofficial stores can be tampered with, and it tells people who got one that way to uninstall it and reinstall from a proper store.

The app runs on MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom SIM cards. If you have a choice, install and update over Wi-Fi: Moya’s help pages say app updates are not data-free.

Registering with your cellphone number

Moya signs you up with three things: your cellphone number, a verification code it sends by SMS, and your name. Use a number you will keep, because the code goes to that SIM. If no code arrives, retype the number carefully; a single wrong digit is the usual cause.

Your Moya number does not have to match the one on your SRD application, but the status check on SASSA’s site does. SASSA sends its one-time PIN to the number you applied with, so keep that SIM nearby when you go on to check.

Finding the SRD link inside Moya

Moya keeps its free websites and mini-apps in a section called Discover. Open Discover, then the Services category, and look for the SRD grant entry. Moya marks data-free items with a small green dot; an entry without the dot may use your own data. If the SRD entry is missing or will not open, update the app first, since Moya says data-free access needs a recent version.

What “data-free” covers, and what it doesn’t

  • Covered: opening the SRD website through Discover, plus Moya’s text chats and short voice notes.
  • Not covered: app updates, photos and video attachments, voice or video calls, and general browsing outside the green-dot list.
  • Not guaranteed forever: the free access depends on Moya’s arrangements with the networks, which SASSA does not control.

Facial verification links that SASSA sends by SMS open in your phone’s normal browser, not in Moya, so they may use data or need Wi-Fi.

Once the SRD link opens, the walkthrough for running the R370 check in Moya takes over. If Moya won’t work on your phone, the comparison of free and low-cost SASSA channels lists other options, and the overview of every way to check SASSA status covers the other grant types too.
