Unlike most South African universities, UJ is still taking 2027 undergraduate applications in October 2026. Its admissions page lists 1 April 2026 as the opening date and 31 October 2026 at 12:00 as the closing time for all undergraduate programmes, with the same deadline for student accommodation. The prospectus states that UJ charges no application fee, whether you apply online or on paper.
All of that is set out in one document: the UJ 2027 Undergraduate Prospectus (PDF). It runs to 100 pages and its contents page says the information was correct in April 2026. UJ also links it from its undergraduate admissions page, together with an online version and an APS calculator.
What the 100 pages cover
- Pages 12 to 19: application rules, closing dates, the APS method and international conversions.
- Pages 20 to 28: campuses, residences, merit bursaries and other student finance.
- Pages 30 to 97: one section per faculty (Art, Design and Architecture; the College of Business and Economics; Education; Engineering and the Built Environment; Health Sciences; Humanities; Law; Science), each with programme codes, minimum APS, subject levels and the campus.
How UJ totals your six subjects
UJ uses the 1-to-7 NSC rating for each of six school subjects and adds them up. Life Orientation is not counted. Matric learners receive a provisional offer on final Grade 11 marks, and the final decision waits for the Grade 12 results. In January UJ ranks every qualifying applicant from the highest APS down, regardless of when they applied, so an early application does not beat a stronger score. You may choose only two programmes, and UJ will not change those choices once it has processed the application.
Entry points from the 2027 faculty tables
- BCom Accounting (CA), B34CAQ, Kingsway: APS 33; English 4, Mathematics 5; Mathematical Literacy and Technical Mathematics not accepted (p. 40).
- BEng Civil, Electrical and Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering, Kingsway: APS 32; English 5, Mathematics 5, Physical Science 5 (p. 60).
- BEngTech Civil Engineering, B6CV3Q, Doornfontein: APS 28; English 4, Mathematics 5, Physical Science 5 or Technical Science 5 (p. 60).
- Bachelor of Nursing, B9N02Q, Doornfontein: APS 30; English 5, Mathematics 4, Physical Science 4, Life Science 4 (p. 68).
- LLB, B4L03Q, Kingsway: APS 31 with Mathematics or 32 with Mathematical Literacy; English 5, additional language 4, Mathematics 3 or Mathematical Literacy 4 (p. 82).
- BSc IT in Computer Science and Informatics, B2I02Q, Kingsway: APS 30; English 5, Mathematics 6. The AI specialisation (B2I04Q) asks for APS 34 and Mathematics 7 (p. 86).
- BEd Foundation Phase Teaching, B5BFPQ, Soweto: APS 28; English 5 as home language or 6 as additional language; Mathematics 3 or Mathematical Literacy 5 (p. 54).
Meeting these numbers does not secure a place. The prospectus warns that UJ works with a fixed quota of first-year places set with the national higher education department, so many programmes fill up with applicants whose scores sit well above the minimum.
Extended degrees for a lower APS
Several faculties run extended versions of their degrees with lower entry points. The extended BSc IT in Computer Science and Informatics (B2E02Q), for example, takes an APS of 26 with English 4 and Mathematics 5. UJ restricts these programmes to first-time entering students with no previous study at NQF level 6 or higher.
Four campuses, four codes
Every programme row ends with a campus code: APK for Auckland Park Kingsway, APB for Auckland Park Bunting Road, DFC for Doornfontein and SWC for Soweto. Classes take place on the campus that offers your qualification, so check the code before you choose a residence. For help with the online form, see our step-by-step UJ application page.
