NWU Prospectus 2027: Where the Requirements Live and What They Say

Searching for an NWU prospectus PDF for 2027 usually ends in frustration, and for a simple reason: North-West University has not posted one. The “Prospectus” link on its admission-requirements page opens a pre-grad enquiry form that asks for your name, date of birth and email address. What NWU does publish openly is a set of faculty web pages ending in “-2027” that list every programme’s subjects, APS and campus, plus a two-page Grade 12 flyer. Together they do the prospectus’s job.

For anyone applying this cycle, the bigger news is that the 2027 window has closed. NWU opened undergraduate applications on 1 June 2026, closed its selection courses on 30 June 2026, and closed general courses and residence applications on 31 August 2026. Its application page now reads “Undergraduate applications are now closed”. The administration fee was R150 for South African applicants and R600 for international applicants, payable online only.

Where NWU keeps its 2027 requirements

An APS scale that tops out at 8

NWU calculates the APS from the six best Grade 11 or Grade 12 subjects, without Life Orientation. Its online APS calculator splits the top band: 90–100% earns 8 points and 80–89% earns 7, then one point less for each ten-percent band down to 1 point below 30%. A learner with distinctions therefore scores more here than under a plain 1-to-7 count, which matters when an engineering degree asks for 34.

Programme minimums on the NWU faculty pages

  • BEng (Chemical, Electrical and Electronic, Computer and Electronic, Mechanical, Industrial, Mechatronic), Potchefstroom: APS 34 or higher; final Mathematics 70%+, Physical Sciences 70%+, and 60%+ in English or Afrikaans.
  • BCom in Chartered Accountancy, all three campuses: APS 32; Mathematics level 5 if you took Accounting in Grade 12, otherwise Mathematics 65%; language of study level 4.
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy, Potchefstroom: APS 32; Mathematics 5 and Physical Sciences 5; language of tuition level 4.
  • BSc in Dietetics, Potchefstroom: APS 30; Mathematics 5 and Physical Sciences 5.
  • LLB, Mahikeng and Potchefstroom: APS 30; home language and first additional language both at level 5. The five-year extended LLB at Mahikeng takes APS 28, both languages at level 4, and Mathematics 3 or Mathematical Literacy 5.
  • BSc with Computer Science and Mathematics: APS 26; Mathematics 5 and Physical Sciences 4.
  • BEd Foundation Phase (Grade R–3): APS 26, with the home and additional language pair depending on the campus.

Every faculty page carries the same warning: because of capacity limits, NWU may select among applicants who meet these minimums. Law ranks applicants on Grade 11 marks, Music holds up to two audition rounds, and Urban and Regional Planning adds a questionnaire and an interview. Engineering applicants who reach 40% in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, with 60% in the language of instruction, can apply for the one-year Xcel bridging programme instead.

Mahikeng, Potchefstroom or Vanderbijlpark

NWU teaches on three campuses, and not every programme runs on each one, so the campus column matters as much as the APS. The flyer also lists academic merit bursaries for first-years, worked out on an average that leaves Life Orientation out: 85–100% earns 100% of tuition, 80–84,99% earns 75%, and 75–79,99% earns 25%.
