The Ga-Segonyana Assmang Bursary Scheme is a partnership between Assmang’s Black Rock Mine Operations and Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, the municipality that includes Kuruman and the surrounding villages in the Northern Cape. The municipality runs the scheme: it publishes the public notice, issues the application form and receives the applications. Only residents of Ga-Segonyana can apply, and each round funds just four or five students, so competition is stiff.
Ga-Segonyana’s recent bursary rounds
Ga-Segonyana’s vacancies page lists three notices for this scheme. Two served the 2025 academic year: one for five students closed on 15 January 2025, and a later notice for four students closed on 21 April 2025. The round for the 2026 academic year, again for five students, closed on 28 November 2025. As of 2 October 2026, Ga-Segonyana had not posted a notice for 2027 study, and the municipality has not said when the next one will appear.
Fields the municipality and Black Rock fund
Unlike Black Rock’s company bursary, which targets mining skills, this scheme covers a broad spread of full-time degrees at public universities and universities of technology. The 2026 notice listed, among others:
- BCom in accounting, economics, law, human resources or business management
- BA in public administration, journalism, communication or industrial and organisational psychology
- Social science, social work and education degrees, and the LLB
- BSc in actuarial science, engineering, geology, quantity surveying, agriculture, architecture or computer science
- Pharmacy, nursing and MBChB
- Town and regional planning
The notice says bursaries are “not limited to” these fields, and private colleges are excluded.
Who Ga-Segonyana selects
Applicants must be South African citizens living within Ga-Segonyana, aged 18 to 35, and either matriculants who meet the minimum requirements or students in their first, second or final year. They must not already hold a bursary or student loan, and the scheme targets historically disadvantaged students in financial need, applying a means test.
- Science-based fields: Grade 12 Mathematics and Physical Science at level 5 or higher.
- Other fields: a Grade 12 average of 60%.
- Current students who were not promoted to the next year of study are not funded.
Paper applications only: forms, documents and the Kuruman address
Ga-Segonyana does not accept faxed or emailed applications. Collect the form from the municipal offices or download the latest one from the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality vacancies page, and state clearly which field you want to study. The five-page form asks about your schooling, family income and whether relatives work for Assmang, Black Rock or the municipality; it is not open to Assmang or municipal employees. Attach certified copies of:
- Your ID document and proof of residence
- Grade 12 results, plus your full academic record if you already study
- Proof of acceptance or admission by a university or university of technology for the coming year
- Parents’ proof of income or social or pension grant, with an affidavit (and a SAPS affidavit if a parent is unemployed)
Hand-deliver the application to the Municipal Manager, Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, corner of Voortrekker and School Street, Kuruman, or post it to the Municipal Manager at Private Bag X1522, Kuruman, 8460. Missing documents disqualify an application, and late ones are not considered. For questions, the notices refer applicants to the municipality’s offices on 053 712 9300.
