The Joe Morolong Assmang Bursary Scheme funds undergraduate study for young people from Joe Morolong Local Municipality, the large rural municipality north of Kuruman in the Northern Cape’s John Taolo Gaetsewe district. Assmang’s Black Rock manganese mine operates in the same district. The municipality administers the scheme through its Human Resources office, so the notice, the form and the application address all come from Joe Morolong rather than from Assmang.
No 2027 notice from Joe Morolong yet
Joe Morolong’s website (joemorolong.gov.za) could not be reached on 2 October 2026, and archived copies of its vacancies page from 2026 show no bursary notice. The most recent official notice we could read is the one for the 2024 academic year, which closed on 31 October 2023. The scheme is long-running: the municipality published a notice for 2017 and a scheme form in 2021. Still, Joe Morolong has not announced a 2027 round. Check the municipal website, notice boards and local radio, and ask at the municipal offices.
Technical and non-technical degrees, undergraduates only
Joe Morolong does not publish a fixed list of fields. Its 2024 notice offered full-time bursaries at universities and universities of technology “for Technical and Non-Technical disciplines”, for undergraduate study only. That leaves room for anything from engineering to teaching, provided you meet the marks below.
Joe Morolong’s eligibility rules
- South African citizen living within Joe Morolong Local Municipality.
- Aged 17 to 35, one year younger than the Ga-Segonyana scheme allows.
- Either in Grade 12 now, or registered at an accredited South African tertiary institution in first, second or final year.
- No existing bursary or student loan, and from a historically disadvantaged, financially needy household (a means test applies).
- For science fields, level 5 or better in both matric Maths and Physical Science; for every other field, a matric average of at least 60%.
- Current students must have been promoted to the next year of study.
Email or hand in: the Joe Morolong application pack
Unlike Ga-Segonyana, Joe Morolong accepts email. The 2024 notice asked applicants to send everything to bursary@joemorolong.gov.za or to hand-deliver it to the Human Resources office. The pack contained:
- The completed application form, from the Joe Morolong Local Municipality website or the HR office.
- Proof of acceptance or admission by a university for the coming year.
- Certified ID copy and a proof-of-residence document.
- Grade 12 results, or your Grade 11 report if you are still in matric.
- Your latest academic record if you already study.
- Evidence of what your parents earn (payslips or grant letters), plus an affidavit if neither parent works.
Joe Morolong rejects late and incomplete applications, so confirm the current closing date and form with the municipality before you send anything. The 2024 notice gave the HR manager’s line as (053) 773 9300.
How this differs from Black Rock’s other bursaries
Assmang’s Black Rock mine supports two other routes. Kuruman-area residents apply to the Ga-Segonyana Assmang bursary by post or in person, while the mine’s own Black Rock company bursary funds a few technical fields and takes online applications from across South Africa.
