UJ Late Applications 2027: Late Enquiry System and Key Dates

If you have not yet applied to the University of Johannesburg, you have not missed it. UJ’s undergraduate applications for 2027 opened on 1 April 2026 and close on 31 October 2026 at 12:00, according to UJ’s undergraduate admissions page. Applying now through the normal route gives you a far better chance than anything UJ offers in January, so start with our UJ online application guide.

For learners who miss that noon deadline, or who want to switch courses once results are out, UJ uses an online tool it calls the Late Enquiry system. It is not a second application window. It shows only the qualifications that still have room after UJ’s final selection, and only to people who meet the minimum entry requirements.

What UJ’s Late Enquiry page says about January 2027

We read UJ’s Late Enquiries page on 3 October 2026. It currently shows the system as closed and gives no opening date: the period runs “from (date and time to be confirmed)”. The page already makes these points about the coming intake:

  • No walk-ins in January 2027. UJ states this in bold terms. Do not travel to any campus to ask for a space.
  • Final selection after results. UJ runs a last selection round once Grade 12 results are released, then tells enquirers the outcome within five working days.
  • Only courses with space appear. If a qualification is full, it will not show on the system at all.
  • South African residents only. Transfer students (who studied at another university or college) and returning UJ students are not considered through this route.
  • Existing UJ applicants log in. If you already have a UJ student number, you need your iEnabler PIN and password.

UJ lists no fee for a late enquiry. If no SMS or email arrives within five working days of the system opening, the page tells you to check your status online or phone the UJ Call Centre on 011 559 4555.

How it ran last year (January 2026)

The 2027 dates are not out, so last year’s timing is the best guide, but treat it as a pattern rather than a promise. On 12 January 2026, UJ News reported that the online late-enquiry system (Mobi) would open on the evening of 13 January 2026, a day after matric results reached universities. The same article said UJ would not accommodate walk-ins at any campus. It also gave the scale of the competition: more than 450,000 applicants had made about 870,000 study choices for roughly 11,200 first-year places.

Those numbers explain why the late route is narrow. By the time the system opens, most popular programmes are already full, and the spaces that remain go to applicants whose final marks clear the requirements.

Your plan between now and mid-January

  • Before 31 October 2026, 12:00: submit a normal UJ application and pick realistic second choices. Read the UJ prospectus summary for minimum APS scores.
  • Before 31 October 2026, 23:59: apply for NSFAS funding if your household qualifies. UJ does not handle that for you.
  • From December: watch UJ’s Late Enquiries page and UJ News for the 2027 opening date and time.
  • Results day: have your ID number, results and student number (if you have one) ready, because spaces on the system can fill quickly.

If UJ is not your only option, our roundup of universities still taking applications shows which other institutions remain open and which run their own late process.

Can I use the UJ Late Enquiry system if I studied at another university?

No. UJ’s page says transfer applicants and people who studied at UJ before are not considered through the late enquiry route. Apply through the normal process before 31 October 2026 instead.
