Wits Prospectus 2027: APS Bonus Points and Course Minimums

Two extra points can decide a Wits offer. The Wits Admission Points Score adds a bonus of 2 to English and to Mathematics once you reach 60%, so those two subjects carry more weight than any other on your report. For the 2027 intake, the last Wits deadline was 30 September 2026, and Health Sciences and a handful of other programmes closed earlier, on 30 June.

Wits publishes its prospectus as the Guide for Undergraduate Applicants 2027, a digital flipbook on the Wits site rather than a downloadable PDF. It covers campus life, residences, faculties and the admission requirements. The figures on this page come from that guide’s companion pages on wits.ac.za: the entry-requirements tables and the online course entries for each degree.

Building your Wits APS, subject by subject

Wits scores your best seven subjects, and unlike most universities it includes Life Orientation. Any subject your programme requires must be among the seven. Wits also counts Further Studies (formerly Advanced Programme) subjects and makes no distinction between designated and non-designated subjects.

  • 90–100%: 8 points (10 for English or Mathematics), and 4 for Life Orientation
  • 80–89%: 7 points (9 for English or Mathematics), and 3 for Life Orientation
  • 70–79%: 6 points (8 for English or Mathematics), and 2 for Life Orientation
  • 60–69%: 5 points (7 for English or Mathematics), and 1 for Life Orientation
  • 50–59%: 4 points; 40–49%: 3 points; Life Orientation below 60% scores 0
  • Below 40%: 0 points

Mathematics is compulsory for the numerate degrees in Commerce, Law and Management, Engineering, Science and most of Health Sciences. Wits accepts Mathematical Literacy for the LLB, Education and most Humanities degrees, but not for Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology. Wits considers only one matric upgrade or rewrite attempt.

What the course entries ask for

These minimums come from the individual Wits course pages. Level 5 means 60–69% and Level 6 means 70–79% on the NSC scale.

  • Bachelor of Accounting Science (BAccSc): APS 44+, English Level 5, Mathematics Level 6. Applicants with 39–43 points and Level 6 in English and Mathematics may be wait-listed.
  • BCom (Accounting): APS 38+, English and Mathematics at Level 5. The waitlist range is 35–37 points, with English 6 and Mathematics 6.
  • BCom with Law: APS 43+, English and Mathematics Level 5. This three-year degree leads into a two-year LLB.
  • BSc(Eng) Civil Engineering and BEngSc Biomedical Engineering: APS 42+, with English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Level 5.
  • BSc Actuarial Science: APS 44+, with English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences all at Level 7.
  • Bachelor of Arts: APS 36+ and English Level 5, with a waitlist for scores of 30–35.

Medicine runs on a separate formula

The MBBCh does not use the APS cut-off. Health Sciences ranks applicants on a Composite Index. The average of five matric percentages (English, Mathematics, the better of Physical or Life Sciences, and your best two others) carries 75% of the weight, and your NBT average carries the other 25%. The minimum subjects are English, Mathematics and Life or Physical Sciences at Level 5.

Wits accepts only in-person, pencil-and-paper NBTs for Health Sciences, and it uses your first attempt from the most recent year. Online NBT results don’t count. The Wits selection-tests page asks Health Sciences applicants to write by 15 August for early feedback. Science applicants must write the NBTs too, and the Actuarial Science entry sets 31 October 2026 as the cut-off.

The 2027 deadlines and fee

  • 30 June 2026: all Health Sciences programmes, Architectural Studies, Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology and BA Film and TV
  • 30 September 2026: every other undergraduate programme, and residence applications, which opened on 1 April 2026
  • Application fee: R100, paid through the Wits self-service portal or by deposit using your person number

You may apply for up to three programmes, and Wits suggests placing one in a less restricted faculty such as Humanities, Commerce or Science. Our Wits applications page covers the portal itself, and the closing dates list shows which other universities still accept 2027 applications.

For admission questions, the Wits Student Call Centre answers on +27 (0)11 717 1888 and at ask.wits@wits.ac.za. Prospectus guides for other universities sit on our prospectus hub.

Does Life Orientation really count at Wits?

Yes. Wits includes it in the best seven subjects but on a reduced scale: 4 points at 90% or above, falling to 0 below 60%. Most other universities leave it out entirely.
