You took the selfie, the page did its work, and now you want to know whether it counted. SASSA has no separate “facial recognition status” screen to look up later. The outcome reaches you in two places: on the verification page the moment the match is done, and afterwards in the way your monthly SRD results change. Reading both together tells you where your R370 stands.
Place one: the verification page itself
When you finish the selfie step, the page reports whether the match succeeded. Take a screenshot of that screen and note the date and time. If you later need to phone SASSA, that record helps the agent find what happened. Closing the page early, or losing signal before the answer loads, leaves you not knowing; in that case rely on place two.
Place two: your monthly results on srd.sassa.gov.za
Run an ordinary status check with your ID number, registered cellphone and the PIN SASSA texts you; our SRD status walkthrough has each screen. Then compare what you see with what you saw before verifying. The change in the month rows is your real result.
What each outcome does to your payment
Matched successfully
The identity hold is lifted, and the application carries on through the normal monthly checks. What that looks like depends on why you were asked to verify:
- New application: it can now move from waiting to an approved or declined month.
- Referred application: the referred label should give way to a normal month outcome.
- Approved but unpaid: a pay day should appear next to the approved month once SASSA processes it.
- New cellphone number: future PINs and SMSes go to the new number.
Passing verification proves who you are. It does not override the means test, so a month can still be declined for income or a database match after a perfect selfie.
Not matched
Nothing moves. The hold stays, and payment stays blocked until a later attempt succeeds. The causes and the practical fixes are on our page about a failed biometric verification.
Could not be completed
Sometimes the check stops without a yes or no, for instance when the Home Affairs system is down or the link has expired. Treat this as not done yet rather than as a failure, and try again with a fresh link.
How long before your status catches up
SASSA has not published a time frame. Two things affect it. Each month is assessed separately, so the change may only show once the current month’s checks run. SASSA has also explained that some approved people miss a payment run because of additional fraud screening, and are paid in a subsequent one. A status that has not moved a day after a successful match is normal. If the month shows as pending meanwhile, what a pending SRD month means explains why waiting is the right move.
If several weeks pass after a successful match and your status still shows the same referred or unpaid result, ring 0800 60 10 11 for help, giving the agent the date you verified along with your ID. Why SASSA asks for verification at all is explained in our guide to SRD biometric verification.
