Completing e-Life certification yourself takes a smartphone with a front camera, your ID number, a cellphone that can receive SMS, and about fifteen quiet minutes. Everything happens on SASSA’s own services portal. Here is the route from the first visit to the moment you know it is done.
Step 1: open the portal the safe way
Type services.sassa.gov.za into your browser, or use this direct link to the SASSA Online Services Portal home page. The address must end in sassa.gov.za with nothing added. Under the system-access menu you will see options to log in, to recover forgotten login details and to register a new account.
Step 2: register once, or log in
First-time users register. According to the portal’s FAQ, you need a cellphone for verification and an email address for notifications. Fill in your personal details, submit, and the portal sends a one-time PIN to the cellphone you entered. Type that PIN in to activate the account.
- Use your own cellphone number, the same one SASSA has for your grant if possible.
- Write down your username and password somewhere safe at home.
- Forgot them later? The recovery option sends your details to the registered cellphone.
- A procurator can keep one account and manage several beneficiaries’ grants from it.
Step 3: check your details before certifying
Once logged in, open the e-Life or life-certification option and follow the prompts. SASSA asks you to make sure your personal details are correct and up to date, so read through the name, ID number and contact details shown. Contact details can be corrected in the personal-information section, which confirms the change with another PIN to your phone.
Step 4: the face check (eKYC)
The portal now confirms that you are the beneficiary by matching a live image of your face against your Home Affairs photo. This is SASSA’s electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) check. To give it the best chance:
- Sit facing a window or a bright light, not with the light behind you.
- Remove glasses, hats and anything covering your face.
- Hold the phone at eye level and keep still until the capture finishes.
- Certifying for an older relative? The beneficiary’s own face must be in front of the camera.
Step 5: confirm it is finished
Don’t close the page until the portal shows a result. Take a screenshot of it, with the date visible, as your own record. Later, log in again and check the notifications on your portal home page. If you were certifying because SASSA sent you a notice, a successful result is what keeps the grant from being suspended. Not sure why the notice came in the first place? Our page on who needs e-Life certification explains it.
When the portal won’t let you finish
- The face match fails. Old photos at Home Affairs and Home Affairs system downtime cause most failures. Our biometric failure fixes go through each cause.
- The portal is slow or down. SASSA had portal problems in March and April 2026 and fixed them by 10 April. If it happens again, try at a quieter time of day.
- You have no smartphone. Any SASSA office can do the certification with you.
For anything else, phone the SASSA call centre (0800 60 10 11); an agent can look at your record.
