Tomorrow Trust is a Johannesburg non-profit founded in 2005 to support orphaned and vulnerable children and young people through education. Its work runs from Saturday and holiday school for primary and high school learners through to a tertiary bursary programme for students who have the ability to finish a degree but not the money. Tomorrow Trust reports that more than 725 of its students have graduated from university.
The trust’s intake for the 2027 academic year, advertised as the Tomorrow Trust Tertiary Bursary STEM Programme, closed on 30 September 2026. Tomorrow Trust has not yet said when the next round opens.
Who the 2027 STEM round targeted
Tomorrow Trust’s listing for the 2027 round set out these requirements:
- South African citizens and permanent residents;
- students from Gauteng, the Western Cape, Limpopo or KwaZulu-Natal;
- a field in engineering, IT and computer science, or the sciences;
- an academic average of at least 60%;
- a household income of no more than R350 000 a year.
Tomorrow Trust describes its students as coming from under-resourced communities and challenging backgrounds, so financial need sits at the centre of selection alongside marks.
More than fees: the four support pillars
Tomorrow Trust pays for tuition, accommodation, living costs, textbooks and essential equipment. The money is only half of the package. Every bursary student also gets:
- Psychosocial support: one-on-one sessions with a psychologist and mental health masterclasses.
- Academic support: academic counselling, tutoring, assessments and study-skills masterclasses.
- Career development: mentorship, CV writing, LinkedIn help, networking events, vacation work and internship exposure.
- Digital and money skills: digital skills training for employability and financial literacy support.
Monthly masterclasses led by people from industry run throughout the degree, and the trust encourages its students to volunteer and give back. Graduates stay part of the Tomorrow Trust alumni network, and the trust says more than 60% of its graduates have gone on to postgraduate study.
What the trust asked applicants to upload
Tomorrow Trust ran the 2027 round online through the Bursio bursary platform, where applicants created an account, wrote a motivation and uploaded their documents. Its listing asked for:
- your identity document;
- your most recent school or university results;
- an acceptance letter, if a university had accepted you;
- proof of household income;
- recommendation letters from a teacher, lecturer, employer or community leader;
- a CV in PDF format.
