Mangosuthu University of Technology in Umlazi is unusual among KwaZulu-Natal universities because it publishes a late cut-off of its own. MUT’s apply page says applications close on 30 September, with late applications accepted until 30 November. So a learner who missed September can still put MUT on a CAO form for about two more months.
The catch is price and priority. MUT says late applications attract a fee set by the CAO. For January 2027 entry that means R250 if your payment reaches the CAO by 31 October 2026 and R470 from 1 November. Our CAO late applications explainer covers how the CAO flags and queues late choices, so here we stick to MUT’s own rules.
MUT’s rules for applicants after September
- CAO only. MUT does not accept applications made directly to the university. Every first-year application, on time or late, goes through cao.ac.za.
- No walk-in prospective students. MUT repeated this before 2026 registration, so do not travel to Umlazi without an offer.
- First choice counts. MUT’s apply page says it prefers applicants who meet a programme’s requirements and who made MUT their first choice. If you add MUT late as a fifth or sixth choice, expect lower priority.
The numbers behind a late MUT application
Before 2026 registration, MUT reported more than 80,000 applications for 3,220 first-year places (MUT news, January 2026). The Diploma in Information Technology (extended curriculum) alone drew 15,415 applications, Public Management 13,642 and Human Resource Management 13,200. With roughly 25 applications for every place, a late choice in those fields has little realistic chance.
Less crowded programmes are a different story. On 27 January 2026 MUT posted a notice that 11 diplomas were full and that it would process no further applications for them (MUT notice). The list covered Accounting, Cost and Management Accounting, Public Finance and Accounting, Human Resources, Analytical Chemistry, Civil Engineering (ECP), Electrical Engineering and its ECP stream, Surveying (ECP), Information Technology (ECP) and Nature Conservation. By implication, programmes not on that list were still processing CAO applications in late January last year. That is a reading of one 2026 notice, not a rule for 2027.
A realistic timeline if MUT is your target
- By 31 October 2026: apply through the CAO and pay R250 rather than R470. Use the MUT application guide and check entry points in the MUT prospectus summary.
- By 31 October 2026, too: submit your NSFAS application, because MUT’s late window does not extend NSFAS’s deadline.
- Up to 30 November 2026: MUT’s stated last day for late submissions, at the R470 fee.
- January 2027: watch the news section on mut.ac.za for any “programmes full” list. Last year registration ran from 19 to 30 January.
MUT has not said whether it will consider applications after 30 November for the 2027 intake. If the date passes, check our guide to universities still open before you give up on studying next year. For questions about a specific programme, use the student recruitment contacts listed on MUT’s apply page.
