A pending SRD result early in a month is routine. A result that has not moved for weeks, or a month that is still pending after the month itself is over, is a different matter. This page helps you judge whether your wait has become a problem, rule out the causes you can fix yourself, and take the case to SASSA through its official channels.
If you only want to know what the word means, start with our explanation of the pending status on an R370 result instead.
When does a long pending stop being normal?
SASSA does not publish a set number of days for the SRD checks. Its guidance for a pending month is to check again later in that month, because verification runs month by month. That gives a practical yardstick:
- Usually fine: the current month shows pending during the first weeks of that month.
- Worth following up: a month is still pending after it has ended, several past months sit at pending, or a brand-new application shows no movement after a few weeks.
For permanent grants applied for at an office, SASSA’s stated processing time is up to three months, but that timeframe is not an SRD rule and should not be read as one.
Rule out these causes before you escalate
Many long waits come from something on the applicant’s side that SASSA’s checks cannot get past. Go through these first:
- Your phone number. Can you still receive SMSes on the number you applied with? SASSA sends PINs and verification links to that number only. If you have lost it, the number must be updated first, which brings a facial-recognition check.
- Any SMS link from SASSA. Look for an unanswered request to verify your identity with a selfie. An incomplete biometric check holds an application back. Open such links only if they lead to a sassa.gov.za address.
- Your ID details. Your name, surname and ID number must match Home Affairs exactly. If the status check itself complains about your details, our guide to fixing ID and Home Affairs mismatches deals with that.
- Your bank account. It must be open, active and in your own name. If you never captured one, or it was rejected, follow our steps for submitting SRD banking details.
- The full status page. Make sure you are reading the row for the right month. A later month may already show approved, declined or referred while an older one looks unchanged.
How to escalate a stuck SRD application
Use SASSA’s own channels, in roughly this order, and keep a note of each contact.
Phone the toll-free line
Ring 0800 60 10 11 between 08:00 and 16:00 on a weekday. Ask the agent to confirm what is holding your application and write down the date, the agent’s name and any reference you are given. Our page on contacting SASSA by phone has tips for getting through.
Put it in writing by email
Email SRD@sassa.gov.za. Give your full name, ID number, the phone number on your SRD application, the months that are stuck and what you have already checked. A written trail helps if you need to follow up again.
Go to a SASSA office
Visit your nearest local SASSA office with your ID and your phone. Staff can look up the case, help with a facial-verification problem on site and update contact details. Ask for your enquiry to be recorded.
What escalating will not do
- An appeal is not an option yet. The Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals only hears months that SASSA has declined, not months still being checked.
- Reapplying does not reset the checks or move you forward.
- No agent, app or website can “unlock” a pending status for a fee. Only SASSA decides, and its help is free. If someone asks you for money or your PIN, report it on 0800 701 701, the national hotline for corruption and fraud.
