Greater Letaba Municipality, the local council seated in Modjadjiskloof in Limpopo’s Mopani District, runs a small bursary scheme for undergraduates who live inside its boundaries. The scheme works on paper: applicants fetch a prescribed form, attach a bundle of documents and hand or post it to the Mayor’s Office. No 2027 invitation has appeared yet. The municipality’s bursary page currently reads “Currently there are no Busaries”, and the most recent invitation (for 2026 studies) shut on 30 January 2026 at 15:00.
Five fields Greater Letaba named in its last invitation
The 2026 invitation, signed by Municipal Manager M.O. Sewape, limited awards to these study areas:
- Tourism
- Agricultural Science
- Engineering and the Built Environment
- Finance
- Information Technology
Both school-leavers entering first year and students already at a tertiary institution could apply, as long as the qualification is undergraduate. The municipality invited people with disabilities to apply.
The residency and money rules in the form’s terms
Section E of the application form spells out how the scheme works:
- Only residents of the Greater Letaba municipal area qualify. The form asks for your ward number and village or township, so expect the council to check where you live.
- Study must be full-time at a South African university, university of technology or TVET college.
- Selection rests on two things: merit and financial need.
- The municipality pays the institution directly, not the student.
- Successful applicants sign a bursary agreement with Greater Letaba, and the bursary only pays for costs within the period that agreement covers.
- Parents or guardians must attach a sworn declaration of their joint annual income.
Greater Letaba does not publish a rand value, an allowance or a work-back period in the form, so do not assume the award covers accommodation or living costs.
Documents to clip to a Greater Letaba application
- Certified copy of your barcoded ID
- Certified copy of your parent’s or guardian’s ID
- Your parent’s or guardian’s payslips
- Proof of residence
- Grade 12 results and/or your latest academic results
- A testimonial from your school, your higher-learning institution or your traditional authority
- Your admission letter from the university or college
- A motivation letter
The form itself also asks which school and circuit you matriculated from, a principal or teacher the municipality can phone, the estimated cost of your course, how many dependants your household already has at tertiary level, and each parent’s annual income.
Where forms were collected and returned
For the 2026 round, printed forms were available at the municipal sub-offices in Mokwakwaila, Senwamokgope and Kgapane and at the main office in Modjadjiskloof, and as a PDF on the municipal website. Completed applications went to the Mayor’s Office, Greater Letaba Municipality, Box 36, Modjadjiskloof, 0835, or by hand to the Civic Centre at 44 Botha Street, Modjadjiskloof. The municipality named Eric Rabothata as the contact on 015 309 9246/7/8.
When a new round opens, Greater Letaba lists it on the bursaries page of the Greater Letaba Municipality website. The 2026 invitation and form on greaterletaba.gov.za show what the next one is likely to ask for, but use only the form the municipality issues for 2027.
Other funding for Mopani and Limpopo students
Because Greater Letaba’s scheme is small and its timing uncertain, apply elsewhere too. Students across the wider region can look at the Vhembe District mayoral bursary if they live in that district, and engineering and planning students should check the MISA technical bursary for municipal skills. More council and department schemes sit on our government bursaries page.
Can I apply to Greater Letaba if I study at a TVET college?
Yes. The terms in the 2026 form cover full-time undergraduate study at universities, technikons and Further Education and Training (now TVET) institutions in South Africa.
Does Greater Letaba accept applications by email?
The 2026 invitation gave only a postal address and the Civic Centre in Modjadjiskloof for returns. It did not list an email address, so check the 2027 invitation before you try any other route.
