NSFAS is taking applications for 2027 funding right now, and its own website gives the closing date as 31 October 2026 at 23:59. The cycle opened on 18 September 2026. As of 3 October 2026, NSFAS has announced no extension, and its board has said in public that it will not give one.

The 2027 NSFAS closing date
- Opened: 18 September 2026, when Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela launched the cycle.
- Closes: 31 October 2026 at 23:59 South African time, according to the NSFAS how-to-apply page.
- Extension: none. On 23 September 2026 SAnews reported that the NSFAS Board had already said there would be no extension of the application period (SAnews).
- Funding outcomes: expected in December 2026, before registration for the 2027 academic year.
Why some sources say 18 November
The 18 November date is real, but it is out of date. The Minister’s launch speech on 18 September 2026 gave 18 November 2026 as the closing date, and the SAnews article on the launch repeated it (SAnews, 18 September 2026). Five days later, NSFAS’s own statement gave 31 October and ruled out an extension. NSFAS’s website still shows 31 October.
Go by the NSFAS website, because NSFAS runs the application portal and the portal is what closes. If you plan around 18 November and the portal shuts on 31 October, your application is lost. If NSFAS ever moves the date, it will say so on nsfas.org.za and its official social media accounts. Until then, treat 31 October as final.
Does NSFAS accept late applications?
No. NSFAS has no late application route for university or first-time TVET funding, and the board’s “no extension” message leaves no room for one this cycle. Last year followed the same pattern. The 2026 cycle closed on 15 November 2025 (Vuk’uzenzele), and we found no official extension. NSFAS then decided all 893,847 first-time applications by 31 December 2025, according to SAnews.
Be careful with the word “late”. Universities run their own late or space-available admission processes in January, but NSFAS does not. Getting a university place in January does not reopen NSFAS. You need to have applied for funding by 31 October 2026, even if you have no university offer yet. You do not need an offer or your final matric results to apply.
Before 31 October: avoid missing it by accident
- Submit well before the last weekend. 31 October 2026 falls on a Saturday, and portals slow down when thousands of people log in at once.
- Check that your myNSFAS status shows the application as submitted, not just started.
- Make sure the cellphone number and email address on your profile are ones you will still use in December, because NSFAS sends outcomes and requests for documents there.
- Parents and guardians: get your consent forms and ID copies ready now, so a missing signature doesn’t hold your child up in the final week.
If you miss the 2027 deadline
If you miss 31 October, NSFAS will not fund your first year in 2027. That does not have to end your plans for next year, though. You can:
- Keep your university or college application going. Your admission and your funding are separate, so a place can still be worth taking up if your family can cover fees some other way.
- Look for bursaries from companies, SETAs and provinces. Each sets its own closing date, and some are still open after NSFAS closes.
- Ask your institution’s financial aid office about payment plans or other aid in January. Each university and college sets its own rules on this.
- Apply in the next NSFAS cycle for the following academic year. That cycle has usually opened in September.

Questions about the NSFAS deadline
Will NSFAS reopen applications in January 2027?
Nothing official says so. Last year NSFAS opened its registration portal from 5 January to 31 March 2026, but that was for students it had already approved, not for new applications. Separate NSFAS windows for TVET trimester and semester intakes run during the year. These are for TVET college students and are announced on nsfas.org.za, not a second chance for university applicants.
I started my application but didn’t finish it. Does that count?
Only a submitted application gets assessed. Log in to myNSFAS before 31 October 2026, finish the form and confirm that your status shows it as submitted.
